Another name of Island Peak is Imja Tse. It is the local Sherpa name of the mountain. The term “Island Peak” was named by British expeditionary team back in 1953. That was the first time this mountain was climbed. However, main summit was scaled in 1956 by Hans Rudolf, Swiss Team and Sherpa. The mountain is an ideal for preparation exercise before scaling Mt. Everest. Lots of climbers follow the same pattern.

Island Peak Climbing Route

Best way to climb Island Peak is to start the climb around 2 or 3 a.m. in the morning. People start the climbing after resting at High Camp (5600 m). It helps to reduce the time and energy during summit push. However, major concern on this option is the high altitude. Less water supply and sleeping at such height come with lots of negative consequences. Therefore, lots of people prefer to ascend the summit from base camp. It is possible.

Base camp of Island Peak to High Camp is relatively easy. It is just a trekking exercise. Just above the high camp the climb is slightly challenging. After scrambling your way the landscape becomes broad. After the broad gully, walking in glacier begins. Climbers then have to climb on a steep snowy slope.

Fixed Ropes are in use from this point. Challenging uphill ascent starts from here which is nearly about 100 m to the summit ridge.

You Won’t see Mt. Everest from Island Peak Top

If you think that you can see Mt. Everest from top of Island Peak, then you are wrong. Mt. Lhotse blocks your view even if the Mt. Everest is just 10 km away  from Island Peak.
