Nepal Trekking is latest travel trend. Presence of lofty mountains, diverse landscape and multi-ethnic villages ensure amazing walking adventure. However, risk of altitude sickness always plays spoilsport. It is because most of the trekking trails of Nepal reaches above 3000 m. Every year lots of trekkers couldn’t finish the trek due to altitude sickness. The blog tells you about 5 smart ways to avoid altitude sickness during Nepal Trekking.

I am working as a trekking guide in the mountains of Nepal for more than a decade. All these years’ experiences have taught me various things. Therefore, kindly read all the things which you can do to avoid altitude sickness. These suggestions are based on past experiences.

5 Smart Ways to Avoid Altitude Sickness during Nepal Trekking

These 5 smart ways to avoid altitude sickness during Nepal Trekking definitely help you prepare for successful trip.

  1. Avoid Alcohol, Caffeine, Nicotine and Greasy Food

It is wise to avoid alcohol, caffeine, nicotine and greasy food before and during the trip. Travelers travel for fun. Therefore, drinking alcohol seems to be normal. However, Nepal’s high mountains are not suited for such fun food habits. These drinks don’t hydrate us.

Consumption of alcohol decreases our chances of being adjusted at the higher elevation.

2. Drink plenty of Water/Fluids and Carbohydrate

Drinking water and eating carbs are the best way to avoid high altitude sickness. High altitude areas of Nepal have low humidity. Moreover, air is dry. You need to drink water more than you used to. Avoid fatty food instead eat more carbs. Carbohydrate requires less oxygen to get digested than fats.

3. Acclimatization Rest Days

Add at least one day as an acclimatization rest day. For some trekking trails two acclimatization breaks are needed. For example, Everest Base Camp Trek requires two breaks. Basic idea of acclimatization is to adjust your body to the surrounding. You should do activities like hiking to higher elevation and resting at lower altitude.

If you walk around during the rest day you can breathe better. Your body get adjusted to the lower oxygen level and pressure. Some trekkers don’t take acclimatization break. This is very fatal. Always respect the itinerary and don’t get overconfident while trekking. Nepal’s mountainous area is very beautiful yet so callous. Trekkers have to be alert all the time and follow the precautionary instructions.

4. Gradual Ascent

Don’t rush and don’t slack. This is the great mantra to avoid altitude sickness. Walk slowly and continuously. Take water breaks. Enjoy the view.

Add 1-2 days as contingency. Don’t make plan in haste.

Prepare your body for continuous walking up to 5 – 6 hours a day.

5. Know your Body

Do thorough check up before heading to mountains. Sometimes, we overlook our body’s condition. It is wise to check whether you have some chronic lungs and heart diseases. Consult to your doctor.

As for the back up plan get the Travel Insurance. You need to get the insurance which covers your medical expenses as well as air evacuation.

These 5 smart ways to avoid altitude sickness are really helpful. At Nepal Hiking Himalaya we follow these guidelines strictly. Therefore, Nepal Trekking journey of our clients have high success rate.

Have open mind. Positive attitude also helps to avoid the altitude sickness.
