Kathmandu Lukla Flight on EBC Trek

Kathmandu Lukla Flight on EBC Trek

On February 2022, I did EBC Trek famously known as Everest Base Camp Trek. It is one of my best travel moment. The trek was planned for 2020. However, pandemic lock down forced me to do it on 2022. As people say; better the later, it was worth waiting for. I had fantastic trek experience. Let me share you my experience of Kathmandu Lukla Flight on EBC Trek.

Everywhere on internet I found various videos and story about Lukla Flight. Therefore, I was nervous before boarding the flight. Moreover, Tenzing Hillary Airport at Lukla is one of the world’s most extreme airport.

My agency, Nepal Hiking Himalaya booked the first flight to Lukla. Please remember to get first flight as far as possible. The climate in the morning is more preferable than in afternoon. Therefore, safety and visibility of morning time make it good to fly first.

Kathmandu Domestic Terminal

Early in the morning after breakfast at hotel we reached the airport at around 5:15 am. At such early time also the airport was full. My guide and I checked in and entered the boarding hall. It was chaotic. There were many people inside the hall waiting for the flight. Some of them were waiting since yesterday. The previous day flight got cancelled due to bad weather. Therefore, airport was frenzy.

Later i found that during peak season the scenario is much more chaotic. So, getting good agency is key to successful EBC Trek.

The terminal is okay. They have some eateries and shops as well. Don’t expect highly luxurious airport though. It is okay. The bus takes you to aircraft.

Kathmandu Lukla Flight on EBC Trek: Aircraft

Runway of Lukla airport is very small. Therefore, big aircraft can’t land. Small twin otter planes are in service. We boarded the small aircraft. Total seat capacity of plane is of 17 passengers.

Flight Experience

As the plane took height, the scenery is outstanding. Hills, forests and villages along with rivers looks stunning. Moreover, the snowy mountains add extra hype to the flight experience.

I was frightened. The infamous story of the airport being an extreme one. During 35 minutes of flight, first 15 minutes i forgot the fact about airport. I was enjoy the breathtaking view.

The plane started to fly between two gigantic hills. It is a narrow river valley. I was wondering about the airstrip. There is no sign of the place where the flight can land. It is really terrifying.

Lukla Airport

The airport was built in 1964 by Sir Edmund Hillary. He bought the land from locals for 2650 $. Therefore, the airport is named after Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay. This is to honor their contribution as first Everest Climber.

It is one of the extreme airports. Moreover, the landscape, runway length and weather make it hard. Overall, the airport is in very beautiful place. It is probably the most scenic airport of the world.

My experience of flight is still fresh. I felt so happy after landing. It was indeed the most memorable.

I took the helicopter flight from Gorakshep to Kathmandu. Therefore, i couldn’t experience the return flight. My memory of Kathmandu Lukla Flight EBC Trek is definitely momentous.
